I'll Take Criminal Negligence for $200

The CrimLaw final has come and gone. In 12 or 13 weeks, my exam will return like a magical time capsule, complete with a grade, symbolizing my legal competency and life’s worth.

I’m guessing I’m not quite incompetent but not worth all that much.

I’ve been good about not talking about the exam, as have most 1Q’s however, a few 2Q’s have been talking inordinate amounts of shit and I’m not sure why.

The law school is a small place, and sound travels well. If you are in the library, classroom, hall, lounge, or anyplace where someone might hear, please don’t say things you wouldn’t want us to know.

Such things as, “At least we have the 1Q’s to help out our curve” or “The 1Q’s will waste all there time on this when they should be talking about that.” Even if it is true it’s offensive nonetheless.

Most of the 2Q’s are really good people and I’m not saying it’s a majority, or even more than a couple of individuals, but the consensus among the 1Q’s is that we have all overheard at least one conversation in which a 2Q was being an asshole.

I have no problem with people talking trash; I do it all the time. But please use discretion and common courtesy . . . at least until we get our grades back.

In another tragic turn of events, like the Indian space rocket which disintegrated seconds after take off, the long awaited ping pong tournament has officially been killed.

While they have 5 finals, you have 3. Less finals, more time to prepare for the 2 remaining (one of which is with them, right--Torts?). Every Spring/Summer class has this issue, though some years it wasn't as widespread. Chances are, also, like most classes at Baylor, the people who talk the most trash like that are likely to be the ones that don't hold a spot in the top of the curves.

When grades come back for these classes, there will be a surprising equal amount of good and bad grades between the two entering quarters. The mere fact that they have had other finals under their belts doesn't really help with Serr tests. Maybe Torts is different...

I suck at Serr but do fairly well elsewhere...Serr exam is a different animal altogether. I want to see his Con Law exams when Guinn decides to hang up the stirups.

what's so different about serr's exams?

I wouldn’t sweat the 2Qs. The difference between a 1Q and a 2Q is one set of finals. Sure, the 2Qs think they are hardened veterans compared to you green little 1Qs, but they have only been in law school for 10 weeks longer than you have. While that 10 weeks of experience does count for something, it is not going to make or break you on the curve. The 3 finals as opposed to 5 finals however will make a difference. If it’s true your quarter has only 3 while the 2Qs have 5, you will have an advantage.

I understand you're anger about this, but give us 2Q's a break. You have had it extremely easy with your 4 little classes. Torts was extremely lazy, criminal law was not much harder. Civ Pro was the only class you had that was difficult to grasp your first time around. Try having contracts and property. By the way, contrary to popular 1Q belief, contracts and property aren't easy because you encounter them all the time. Believe it or not, there is more than offer and acceptance or deeds and leases. Consider yourself lucky--you will never get your ass handed to you by Trail. Your second quarter will only be filled with four classes. You will never have to feel the pressure of the second quarter at Baylor. If we 2Q's want to hope that the 1Q's fall flat on their face and improve the curve for the rest of us, then toughen up and leave us alone. Our first year will be harder than yours and we have a right to be a little upset.

Oh booo hooo, you poor little 2Qs! Those 1Qs will never know the pain of the 2nd quarter like you do! It’s so unfair! They won’t have Trail! You say the 1Qs need to toughen up and let you bitch and moan. Toughen up yourself. Contracts and property, oh my! Cry "you're" river, build "you're" bridge and get over it. And learn the difference between the possessive "your" and the contraction while you're at it.

Two out of the three high grades in my summer crim law class were 1Qs. The summer starters basically kicked the spring starters butts that summer and most of the quarters after that as I remember. I'm proud to have been a summer starter :-)

On a somewhat related note, I find the irony of your post hysterical, Swanburg. You bitch about the 2Qs gossiping about 1Qs and you hearing it through the walls, and within the day you decide it's a good idea to get together with your nearest and dearest and do some of your own gossiping. FYI, if the walls were thin enough that you heard the 2Q trash talk, they didn't get thicker by 1AM the same night. Next time you want to bitch about me or anybody else, please "use some discretion and common courtesy."

(1) “By the way, contrary to popular 1Q belief, contracts and property aren't easy because you encounter them all the time.”

I don’t think anyone, 1Q or not, has ever held that belief. If you think 1Q’s suppose that to be true then you are insulting. If you believed that yourself going in, you are retarded. Either way you come across poorly.

(2) “You will never have to feel the pressure of the second quarter at Baylor.”

Are you saying we are all going to fail out, or somehow miraculously jump to being 3Q’s? If I’m not mistaken, we will all eventually take the same required classes.

(3) “Our first year will be harder than yours and we have a right to be a little upset.”

You have the right to be upset with yourself for starting in the Spring, and maybe the right to be upset with Baylor, but why are you upset at us?

The wonderful thing about Baylor is we all get what is coming to us in due time. PC awaits us all regardless of what quarter you took Property or Contracts.

Don’t hate the player, hate the game.

Yes Nora, I was talking shit, yes you caught me and yes the timing was ironic but I wouldn't get too worked up about it. We didn't say anything too bad; I mean you should have heard what we said about everyone else.

Any alumni want to comment on whether this kind of petty crap goes on out in the real world?

Seriously, I would not care to be in a profession where a couple (maybe 3 at the most) of quarter hours cause this much anger and BS. I mean really, talking about people behind their back? And people getting upset about it? No wonder we have prom...this IS high school!!!

Just meet out at the bike racks at 3 o'clock and fight it out.

WOW!
Looks like this has been the most popular posting yet.

btw- I've heard the 1Q's talk and the 2Q's talk about the crim law exam. Neither has anything on the other!

But, after hearing all the debate, I am on the 1Q's side.

Cry more - all of you, please.

This is highly entertaining for us who are about to take the Bar.

To be a 1L again - easy days for sure.

To everyone: there's always going to be bitching and moaning from certain people in every class.

But, when you get to PC, you'll realize it doesn't matter. In PC, there are only 4 things to worry about: 1. getting called on in class; 2. getting assigned a memo; 3. getting your classmates assigned a memo; and 4. not being the person that fails the class.

But, as the old tell the young, it passes through one ear and out the other. So, please stir up more drama because it creates a nostalgic feeling among us ancient ones.

1) "booo hooo"

Sounds like Counsellor or a Counsellor fanatic.

2) We all take the same classes eventually.

YOU'RE missing the point. It's not the classes, it's the volume.

3) no one said we were mad at 1Q's. We're mad and a little stressed out at the situation. You just give us an opportunity to relieve some of that anger.

4) You do have an advantage because you only have 3 exams.

5) No 1Q thinks that about Contracts and Property.

I over-heard a group og 1Q's saying that.

6) To all the older students who think this debate is crap--it is. But just remember the stress you felt during this time--without having experienced PC or studying for the bar. We all know it's petty, but it's finals; emotions are high. Give us a break.

You sound like a homo from malibu. You'll soon find out why people at this law school are so competitive, talk to me in a couple of years.

holy shit! all of your posts would be a lot better if you would add curse words for emphasis. i mean "boo-fucking-hoo" is a lot more humorous than plain old "boohoo". seriously though...let's get real. we are all arrogant bitches...the 2Qs have legitimate reasons to resent us 1Qs...and us 1Qs feel threatened and are tired of hearing the "you have it so easy" speech (even though it is totally fricking true). i propose that everyone take a deep breath and throw back a shot. then just be happy that you aren't (1) in a shitty, entry-level job, (2) homeless, (3) dying a slow, painful death, (4) back at home with your parents. doesn't that make you all feel better? i am all for being an angry bitch...but all this angry bitchiness is giving me a headache.

trouble always follows swanburg...but he never tells a lie.

If all the PC people and people studying for the Bar are soooo busy and have life soooo much harder than 1Q's and 2Q's, how is it that PC and bar people and alums have time to read a 1Q's blog?

AHHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I LOVE IT!

all you 2Qs need to stop crying. im a 6Q, and you guys will never have it as hard as we had it. We had it the hardest ever. If you think different than that, you are stupid, because we had it so bad. One day I fell asleep in class, and Trail shaved off one of my eyebrows!!!!!!

beat that crybabies!

First off, I'm not in law school myself. One of my friends is in school with ya'll and directed me to this blog because this friend knew I would find it amusing.

Second, for you to guess that you're "not quite incompetent" is a big leap and I would like to see what evidence you have to back that up. From what I've read on here such an assumption would be highly debatable.

FYI- Once you get out in the real world and you are working and lower down in the ranks people will be talking shit about you. While you may disagree with these people and the inordinate amount of shit they may talk about you, if you have any interest in keeping your job and not being tortured to death your first year learn to deal with the trash talk and let it roll off your shoulders. This happens in every profession and in every work place. It doesn’t change and just because it’s happening to you doesn’t make you special.

Sounds to me that Jonathon is just whining like a baby and needs to grow up. You’re in law school now. This is supposed to help you transition into the working field while preparing you for the type of work you are going to be doing. While this is a humorous and amusing blog to read, because of what you write about it makes it extremely juvenile and not something I would expect to hear from a law school student. Grow some balls and take it like a man dumbass.
