Baylor Hires Space Cowboy, Hawk Hawkings

Since the Meaty Bears have gone silent and Osler has a thing for pandas, I went on the hunt for a picture of Baylor's newest hire. Below are the fruits of my labor.

Art Briles does not wear a condom because there is no such thing as protection from Art Briles.
We can only hope Red Andrews retirement is simply a temporary sojourn in search of Tommy Lee Jones jokes. We have a seven year contract ahead of us.

Maybe it's because I'm not from Texas, but how is this a good hiring choice on Baylor's part? As I understand it, the last bowl game Houston went to was the Hawaii Bowl in 2003 where they were beaten by the University of Hawaii in overtime. That's the same as getting beaten by Waco High School except without the travel expenses.

Does Baylor Athletics have Asperger's? Do the have to repetitively hire mediocre coaches or does $1.8 million a year now not buy talent like it used to?

I believe they took my advice and paid the good coach in Schrute-bucks.

Art Briles is a dang good hire. Based on just his UofH job, he inherited a team that was 3-8, 0-11, and 5-7 the years before he was hired there. In his fourth year, the year when he has almost all the players he recruited in his system (the watershed year for a coach), he took UofH to a 10-4 record. That's a pretty dang impressive turn around. UofH has also been to 2 other bowls since 2003 and has qualified for another this year: 2005 Forth Worth Bowl, 2006 Liberty Bowl, and 2007 Texas Bowl. He also has a good reputation in high school football which is big for recruiting. He coached years at Stephenville High School (1988-1999). Stephenville had not made the playoffs for 30+ years before his arrival. While there, he had 4 state championships, the last one coming in the year that his son, Kendall, led the team as QB to the title. This was all done in Class 4A which is the next to largest classification in Texas--and pretty tough competition.

So yes, Art Briles is a very good hire.

And the comparisons of U of Hawai'i to Waco High is assinine. Hawai'i has been very a respectable football team since around 2000. In 2003, if I remember correctly, Timmy Chang was setting all sort of passing records. Granted, their defense wasn't very good, but they could almost outscore anyone.

Hawaii is going to a BCS bowl this year. Despite having a larger stadium and budget than the Hawaii program, Waco High has yet to do that.

My apologies for offending Texas Alum. I didn't see the other two minor bowl game losses attributed to Artie Briles, but not mentioned on the University of Houston's craptastic website. Surely a coach who leads a team that can beats the like of SMU, UTEP and Rice (and barely lose to Louisiana-Lafayette) deserves some respect on my part as the new coach of Baylor football.

Yeah.. and the same amount of sarcasm goes for Hawaii too.

From what I hear, Art Briles is not only a good coach, but a good offensive coach (coach of offense). From what I've seen lately, Baylor needs a coach who can build up the offensive program (the defense has been a pretty good demonstration of the idea that practice makes perfect, or at least pretty darn good until they get worn out at the end of the game; the offense, not so much).

I'm saddened by Baylor's failure to sign Mike Singletary, but am consoled by the recruiting prospects offered by the reputation of an incredibly successful TX high school coach (having grown up in a 4-A district in Ft. Worth, I know Stephenville's legend, and hated them like their other competition).
