Soccer and Segregation

This weekend's GBA soccer tournament was titled, "USA v. the World." As you can imagine from the previous sentence, one team had Americans while the other team had non-Americans.

I'd describe the event further but I think everyone already knows how it went. The foreigners were good, they let the American's score a few goals and everyone wore clothes. No surprises.

So, it should have been called "America vs. The World?" After all, Americans include anyone who lives in North or South America - not just people who live in the USA.

I've never liked that argument. First, USA is the only country with America in the name. Second, if you're going to refer to yourself by your continent you are going to be more specific than simply American.

A person from Canada is Canadian, a person from Mexico is Mexican, and a person from the United States of America is American.

You're right. There is no such thing as a European, African, Asian, etc. Wait a minute . . .

And true, USA is the only country with America in the title, so I guess only people from "South Africa" are Africans.

Finally, I may have to be more specific in some cases, but in most, doesn't the general term also apply. Example: I am a human (and there are tons of other humans) . . . I am also a white human (as are most Baylor Law Students).

I'm just trying to make a point. People are too egocentric about "America." We are not the only Americans. That's it.
